Randy's Lear45 Build Thread

Hey Guys,

After a long time in the Hanger, a member for years and years, and I have been active with comments and I hope help on how to I build stuff,  but I have not ever had a site where members or guest could take a look at how I built my sim from the beginning with pictures.

I little back ground about me might be helpful to understand my love of flying.  Someone who I call my real father was a Continental Air Lines pilot. When he retired the he was the number 2 man in seniority of thousands of pilots with Continental.  He was a captain who flew the 747  from LA to Hawaii and back once a week.  My mom wanted me to follow in his footsteps.  So 16 years old I was working on my pilot  license so I got a flight instructors rating and it is still valid today.  So my idea for a sim was one that flew like a real airplane ie motion.  Commercial flight sims are identical to the real airplane.  I got to fly an airbus 380 at the United Air Lines training facility here in Denver, Colorado and talking with their pilots, they said that sometimes they didn't know that they were not in the real plane until they opened the cabin door and saw that there were no passengers back there.

So I wanted what could be a motion sim.   And so I started thinking what would be the lightest way to build Ron's shell.......

Hi Randy!  Awesome to see you have finally started your build thread!  I have told a few guys what you have done with your project but don't think they believe me when I try to explain to them what you have built.

As an example, the photo you have posted is made of foam based on the Project45 shell kit!  I think you are the only one to have done this.  You will have to go into more detail as to why you went this route.

I went into your post and made some edits including getting your first photo up so folks can see it without having to click on the link.

You can see how to do this HERE in the second post called "How to add a photo to your post".

Great start Randy!  Looking forward to seeing more photos of your project!

So basically I traced each piece of Ron's shell and cut out 1" foam. Then glued each part in place and covered the seams with the strong aluminum tape.  I could lift the whole thing by myself and move it around no problem.

Hi everybody,

Now I am making a reply to my own project.  Not sure if this is the way to do this, but I need to jump to some really exciting news.  I have found what I think will be a wonderful solution to the view looking out the front view out the window.  So in a million dollar Simulator there is an elabrate projection system that is very difficult to build.  The system that Ron and Mark and many others have used is a screen with three projectors.   This is somewhat easier but has some down sides.  To do this one you need a good sized room and maybe Ron would tell us it would be good to have a high ceiling.  I am not sure on that one.  One thing that makes this approach good or better is the quality of the projectors.  You need at least three of them and they are not cheap.  I think Mark said that he uses a certian software the line up the projection.  One last thing I think is important is also motion.  This is doable now but the down side is the cockpit moves and the screen does not.

All that said what I just bought is two 49" gamer quality high power monitors.   They were $900.00 each and I show you what they look like, but I don't have them in stalled yet.  I promise to get some pictures of them, but I did not want to spoil my build history string.  This is the address of the monitors:https://www.gamestop.com/pc-gaming/monitors/pc/products/samsung-49-in-super-ultra-wide-dual-qhd-5120x1440-120hz-curved-gaming-monitor-c49rg9/277492.html?utm_source=google&utm_medium=feeds&utm_campaign=%24PLA_%24NB_MNFR_Preowned+Tech_Samsung&utm_id=15171822958&gclid=Cj0KCQjwjIKYBhC6ARIsAGEds-JTh34P6CuTszzterYBWHDeVDmnVv7GpZQG6fjiVNla7ebmPrONpxAaAm6KEALw_wcB&gclsrc=aw.ds

It is a long address, but it works you can just click it.  Hey Mark your out the window display is just great.  I can hardy wait for some pictures looking out the window on my new monitors.

By for now.

Randy

Hi Randy,

Yes I like you am looking forward to the views those two monitors will give you. As you'll find you will need to assign the left hand view to the left monitor and ditto to the right monitor. P3D has built in View groups to do this but good luck with that. P3D is very poor with documentation and examples, so fortunately there are Youtube videos of people who have had a go. The other option is Nvidia Surround ( assuming you have an Nvidia GPU ) or AMD Eyefinity ( for AMD cards). This works very well and I used Nvidia for many years when I had monitors. The down side is the real 180 deg view will be reduced to about 130 deg. If you didn't know or your guests didn't know it wouldn't bother you. Eventually however, when trying to land, when on the  Base leg and you are looking left or right for the runway to turn to final, it aint where it should be !

So if you can get View Groups to work then all good, however if you buy a warping software and Fly Elise Immersive Display is mine, then it does all the hard work and does the View Group file for you. This way assuming your physical screens do wrap around to 180 deg from your seat position, the Fly Elise software will give you a real 180 deg picture.  I'm going to take a punt and guess that you might need a third screen to make up the 180 deg ?

The next thing for all of us to consider is the frame rate. If you have a 4K monitor and now you have 2 or three of them, your computer better be on the side of a super computer. I say this because as you get the wow factor of the visuals you are going to want to start turning the graphics up. I can tell you if you fly to a city it can very quickly turn your view into a slide show. My projectors are 1080p so I don't have the luxury of a 4K view. I can tell you now Los Angeles, New York, Washington DC etc are a little treat I give myself occasionaly full well knowing that it's going to be jerky. Please remember though this is in my case and we all have different computer specs. If you go cheap with the computer CPU and the GPU then you'll only see what you pay for.

This is a great site to really see what your bang for buck is going to give you........or not. Check out the CPU chart whilst you are there. Remember you'll see what you are prepared to pay for.

Now all this information is relevant to P3D. MSFS 2020 is a different ball game. Since no one has optomised true multi screen views yet as only the beta is released , we just don't know what the final product will be like. I can tell you this much that the final release for multi screens has been delayed. I can tell you that Fly Elise has given a detailed description, that the geometry is incorrect, to Asobo. I do not know whether that has anything to do with the delay, but can only be a good thing to get it right on release.

So, in summary, P3D out of the box is poor in many ways and requires money for enhancing software and a very good computer to handle more than one screen esp in built up areas. Some of my views in P3D  however are BETTER than the equivalent in MSFS.

MSFS out of the box however, visually, is way ahead of P3D. Throw in the next update for multiple screens at no dollar cost and we are going to all be in simulator heaven.................provided that you have the hardware to compute more pixels with more screens.

Now throw in a motion simulator as you have alluded to ..................and you'll blow all your accrued 'Brownie Points'  for your partner in one go. lol

Mark S.

Looking forward to the pictures Randy.
