P3D Visuals and Tweaking Discussion

(Original thread started on 11-18-15 by Eric Tomlin)

NO stretching...and in HD...and good performance.

It certainly looks good but I'm not quite certain I understand. Does he have three PC's running just the visuals, one for each projector? Or is it similar to us with two running the sim and one running the three projectors?

You know I wondered the same. He says:

"The PC's are high spec (2 are 4770k with GTX 680's and the forward unit is a 3960x and GTX 780)."

The forward unit? I assume the computer for the forward view. If that is the case he will need maybe another two computers for the cockpit.

The other piece of the puzzle is that to quote the P3D forum.

"Prepar3D v2 does not have multi-channel support anymore, so you’ll need to set this up via multi-player or use a third party solution like wideview."

Those of us using three computers seem to be able to run everything with reasonable frame rates. Maybe three projectors may be different but I assume their lower resolution should make it easier for the CPU/GPU's?

My understanding is that you are correct where you assume the forward machine was for the center projector. I believe (IIRC) that he's using Wideview. There's quite a bit of info in the forum discussion that I link to.

Frank Cooper tells us what this is:

It's P3D V 2.4 with Wideview and Widetraffic running on three separate PC's with high def short throw projectors on a 188 degree 2.4 meter wide curved screen with a fast wired network. The PC's are high spec (2 are 4770k with GTX 680's and the forward unit is a 3960x and GTX 780). I run Immersive display pro on each of the PC's. I bought Immersive Calibration Pro to Calibrate my 3D Virtual images and then imported that data into my Immersive Display Pro, P3D and the ProSim Jetstream Flight model Config.

So there you have it. What he does not tell us is what is HD in this case. ie what number of pixels per inch are we looking at in his presentation. He just says "short throw, which means he can focus the image at a short distance say 3 to 4 feet from the projector. The screen looks to be about 4 to 5 feet tall, so how many pixels does he get on the screen? Ron will tell you in his set up, which is almost the same as Captain Cooper's you tend to ignore the resolution because it is so cool to look out the window and see all this stuff moving around out there. I will tell you from my own experience that the quantity is not real. It tends to be not sharp and the pixels about 1/32" if you look at the screen close up. All I am saying is it is very difficult to see what the quality is from this presentation. This is not cutting edge quality. I think we will be using a curved big screen monitor which will have HD in the future as soon as the price comes down which it will. Most of us do not have the room for this 8' foot tall 220 degree screen which is the case for Chris. His cockpit fills the room it is in.

I found a tutorial by Mark Hargrove to help set up outside visuals if you are using the latest version of P3D, version 3.3 or higher and using 3 LCD TV's for those views. In the new version of P3D is a section called "View Groups" where you can set up your outside views. I found this tutorial very helpful and I was able to set up my views within an hour. Thanks Mark for creating this tutorial! To make it easier I downloaded and printed the tutorial so I could read thru it first and take it into the flight deck with me as I was setting up my views.
