DrDave's Progress

Page 1 of 3Next

Hi Folks,

Been building (Again) the sim after 3 moves and unpacking. To save money (We are retired, Donna and I), I am building on a shoe string and purchased a number of items from EnglishRebel (not sure why he stopped).

Following is today's progress. Yoke and crossover complete as well as MIP tower, TQ pedistal abd TQ and Center console with Boeing CDU.

I hate to ask this as I support Jet45 (I have a copy) but can anyone suggest a gauge/app that can drive the CDU? I've had the Boeing CDU for some time and not sure if the Jet45 CDU can interface with it. I can't afford the CDU software anyway.

Great progress Dave! Looks like you are building a single seater?  Unfortunately, the Jet45 FMS (CDU) is not able to be interfaced to any other vendors hardware/software.  As you are aware, the UNS1 is very different from the Boeing CDUs (Collins?).  My Jet45 FMS software is specific to the UNS and the Universal CDU layout and button mapping.  While you should be able to use your CDU to "fly" the aircraft, you will not see any FMS indications on Jet45 unless you use the Jet45 FMS.  Sorry.

Sorry tried inserting photos via a link from Google Drive. Obviously didn't work. Did attach the photos to the post at the bottom. Still can't get this to work even after reading the post on the Welcome Forum. Since everyone else can display photos, I am doing something very wrong.

Help would be welcome. I have photos for Jason on using the Saitek Yoke added to the Column with Ron's yoke head and using the PCB from the unit to interface the pots and buttons to the Sim.

Jason, I found a Honeywell FMS P3D gauge. I can create FSUIPC macros to feed the mouse clicks. The gauge screen can be moved to the hardware.

Not sure what you meant about Jet45 not working with an outside FMS. I plan on using Jet45 and its offsets with FSUIPC, Arduino cards and some of my own hardware. I would hope Jet45 interfaces with P3D for flight plans, GPS, etc.

I have built my own EFIS, MCP and Comm unit. Surely they can drive Jet45 instruments either thru P3D or its offsets.

Thanks.

I still need input so I can add photos to a post. I copied a link from Google Drive jpgs and added then to the link popup in the post header. Didn't work.

Hi Dave, you are half way there posting up photos.  Once you have them uploaded, like you already have, click on the photo link and open the photo so you can view it.  Then right click and select "Copy Image Location". You are basically just grabbing a image link.  (You could probably simply copy and paste your Google image link in the image block below without uploading to Hangar45 if you wanted.)

Then go back to your post and where you want to insert the photo, select the second icon from the upper right in the active post block.  It is the "Image Icon".  This window will pop up:

When the image icon opens up, drop the image link in the "Source" block.  You can give it a name if you want in the "Image Description" block.  Last but not least, I recommend sizing your images to 450 pixels in the first block and let the second pixel dimension block auto fill so that the proper aspic ratio of the photo remains correct.

With that said, I noticed that your two posted photos are way less than 450 pixels from left to right.  You can upload the full size photo and resize it with this window above so it looks fine in your post.  Then the rest of us can right click on your photos to blow them up to full size to see fine details if needed.

One last tip, if you post something and a few minutes later or even an hour later you want to add something, you can edit your previous post.  This way you will not have two or three of your own post back to back.  I combined your last two post and got your photos displayed.  Play around with this photo feature, it is very user friendly.

By the way, the reason we have to upload the photos and post them in this manor rather than embedding them directly in the post is because if we did, it would slow the website down to a crawl.

Let me know if this info helps!

Dave,

To clarify my previous post, it's not much but here is what you won't get out of Jet45 if using a 3rd party FMS:

1. You will not see the flight plan on the MFD Display Units in Jet45
2. You will not see any waypoint information on the PFD beside the HSI
3. Plug and play use of the FMS/CDU, no offsets or macros to write

Not a huge list of features, but being able to display the flight plan on the MFD (DU2/3) is huge.  I'm pretty sure the FMS you found probably does all the other stuff mine does like fuel planning, flight plan editing, SIDs/STARs etc.

All my pictures are posted using google service. It’s not google drive tho. It’s google photos.

I created public album within google pictures and copy paste picture LINK to the post using picture tool.

Feel free to reach out with any questions.

Jason,

Not sure I understand. I have not installed Jet45 except to test it with FSX just as a display. Obviously need to complete a good part of the sim.

Can one not set up a flight plan in FSX/P3D and it would be displayed on the MFD and PFD? What did simmers do for flight plans before the Jet45 CDU was completed?

Thanks Ron,

Understood!

Dave,

The version of Jet45 you have can display FS/P3D native flight plans if they are created in FS/P3D.  Im not sure what format your CDU will use. Since it's a gauge, it may not actually save a flight plan file that can be read by external applications.  Can you send me a link to the CDU that you downloaded and I can see what it can do?

Jason,

I have attached the documentation. Apparently it picks up the flight plan created in FSX/P3D. Did Jet45 do that also before the CDU was created? It is an FX/P3D gauge written in XML.

Hi Dave,

I am sure Jason will pop in here to better answer your questions soon.  But in the meantime, I will tell you what I know about the CDU and Jason's FMS software.

Looking at the third party FMS software you have, it looks like it is designed to work directly with FSX.  Jason's FMS software is designed to work directly with his Jet45 Advanced Avionics Suite to maximize the functionality of not just the FMS/CDU but also  the cues that are displayed on the Display Units.  The FMS software can be used in bezel mode or you can use hardware, like what we have developed HERE

I think it is going to come down to what you are wanting to get out of your sim and FMS software and what you can afford.   I am sure you will be able to use several functions with your FMS software in conjunction with Jet45, but no doubt, there is going to be some major areas that are missed.

When we first started this project back ion 2008 and before Jason had developed his FMS software, we had to use a $19.95 version of Friendly Panels to get something that resembled a FMS.  It was missing a lot of functionality but at the time, it was better than nothing.

Your best bet if you are planning on using Jason's new v2.0 Jet45 AAS is to also plan on using his FMS software and the CDU hardware they we have developed.  Otherwise, you will have to report back to us and let us know how much functionality you are able to obtain with this third party FMS software.  Hopefully it is satisfactory.
