TCAS Sounds and Software Discussion

(Original thread started on 06-28-11 by Rand Mathews)

Curious if anyone has figured out a way to get TCAS callouts to work with Jet45? There are some standard ones in PMsounds, and is there a way to link them to Jet45?

Or Jason, Eric, have you been working on this? And can you throw in some insight? Are there any offsets that you can share for the TCAS? I found some offsets in the FSUIPC list, but going to need some time with that this! If you think it works in Jet45 without any action that would be great. I've never heard it working with mine, but that doesn't mean it doesn't.

Currently, a traffic warning in Jet45 does not trigger an aural sound. Eric and I have been discussing a sound module, but development of that is still a ways into the future. The only offsets in Jet45 that are available for TCAS have to do with the display range only.

Well rats, that's not what I wanted to hear.....

Thinking, which usually gets me in trouble.....

Since the traffic is a MSFS function, shouldn't there be a way to use those offsets in SIOC and attach that to a sound file? i know you can create your own .wav file and incorporate that into SIOC, and you can also add your own to PMsounds. So is this a possibility until Jet45 is updated?

SIOC Definition: The generic term for a software suite used to Drive IOCard HW, Connect to simulation systems through FSUIPC or the IOCPProtocol, Compile text based script into Compiled SIOC scripts, Run Compiled SIOC Scripts, and thus establish a connection between OC IOCard HW and the simulation system as defined by the script. (Now you know) To learn more about SIOC check this out:

In the meantime I found this post while doing some research:

Additionally, there is a free little program by Peter Dowson called Trafficlook and it shows all the AI airborne flights in FS. It details the ID, ALT, SPD, HDG, etc.... also distance and altitude from your aircraft. There's also one in the FSX SDK called traffic toolbox, and it does the same thing. I'm trying to figure it out but I'm far from being an ace programmer. But from what I gather, you can use FSUIPC offsets to relay that info into another software package.

Hey Rand, the TCAS in JET45 isn't tied to any sounds from JET45 itself. I got to host a guest last night in the sim for about 2 hours. I didn't hear any TCAS alerts but I did have them show up as red on the MFD. I didn't check PMSounds for those sounds to be checked, but I'm guessing it may have been another aircraft quite a while back that this worked with. I'm still confident though that with some tinkering, one can force PMSounds to play TCAS alerts via FSUIPC.

UPDATE: I was working on this a little bit today in SIOC. I was able to import a .wav file and could trigger it with either an input or an offset! Kind of cool because you can use any .wav file and have it go off when ever you want. Finally able to get an audible TCAS warning to trigger when traffic is in the proximity. I made a short video show casing the TCAS sound.

At marker 1min 9sec in the video the TCAS warning comes on, and I programmed the master caution warning to blink at the same time. Anyway still have more to implement but it's a start.

Also no comments on the landing, only a test flight. Spotted a RWY and just dumped everything, so no procedures followed and I probably broke the Lear. But hey, I'm an A&P so I fixed it!

Enjoy!

NOTE: To avoid confusion, this was all programmed in SIOC, and is not a current option in Jet45 AAS software.

Anyone know how I can get PMSounds to trigger on TCAS? I have verified tonight that it doesn't function, but Jet45 recognizes the incursion (visual red)

I've been trying to get TCAS alerting running with PMSounds now for a couple of days and have come to the conclusion that it relies on an Offset that is set from other PM software. Looks like it uses PM's PFD Various offset 04FE See HERE

When you heard the warning were any of you running other PM software at the same time as PMSounds?

Bummer....... This backs up what Randy and I discussed at length.  Any ideas how we can get it to work? Maybe Jet45 can trigger it, seeing as how it already acknowledges the incursion?

I'll have a play around with the offsets and see if I can get it to trigger an alert. Once we know how to trigger it then it should just be a matter of a small mod to Jet45 or I may be able to write a stand alone program that sits in the background monitoring the traffic and setting the Offset. I will have to use the second option anyway as I'm using the P8R Glass Cockpit software.

UPDATE:  Well I've spent two nights flying around trying to crash into planes and setting Offsets with FSInterrogator but had no luck with getting TCAS to sound in PMSounds. Then I found a great little prog called "FS Flight Keeper" by Aerosoft which connects over WideClient / FSUIPC and has loads of different sounds and alerts. I have just tried it and TCAS works perfectly.

This program does loads more too, is only 34.95€ to buy and has a free 31 Day demo so worth checking out:

You can add ILS marker tones in the Options but I have not heard them yet. I set the correct ILS frequency and selected MKR on the RMU, did I miss anything? I also monitored the Marker offset and did not see that change either.

Also note that although you get TCAS alerts with this software it is not perfect as there is no "ascend" or "descent" announcement.

Bought this little program yesterday: http://secure.simmarket.com/dbs-studio-tcas.phtml

Just got the activation in the mail and hopefully I will test this weekend. I'm fairly hopeful it will work good. The feature that sold me- it DOES provide resolution advisory for the collision avoidance. I have only found one other that offers this (below), most just offer a warning.

Here's the review from AVSIM:

http://www.avsim.com/pages/0110/DBS2/TCAS.htm

Not sure if it will work with online traffic yet though.

Another option is TCAS II v1.0 in the file section on AVSIM. I haven't tested it, but it does claim to work online. In the instructions it mentions that in an alert- the window will pop-up... this is the reason I am trying the payware first. I don't need pop-ups on my forward display.

Between the two I should be able to get something to squawk at me!

UPDATE: Option 1 (payware) works like a champ! DBS Studio TCAS

While diving at AI traffic- Climb CLIMB CLIMB! Descend... Descend NOW! There are more aural commands than I thought there would be. There were some install issues, but not a huge deal. I wish I could have it on a remote PC instead of through the FSX sounds but I'm willing to deal with it. The gauge doesn't even show up unless you pick it from the menu bar (good for me) and the aural alerts still work when the gauge is not visible (what I had hoped) Definitely work a few bucks to get this active.

Here is a short video of DBS Studio TCAS in action:

Quick question for planning my next panel which will contain TCAS controls:

What is the difference between auto and manual mode for the TCAS? I know about an offset to switch between both modes (73D6 bit 0) but there is no explanation in the Jet45 AAS manual. By the way, TCAS works like a charm in VATSIM online sessions. Love it!

(Posted by Eric Tomlin on 11-21-15)

Hi Chris, in AUTO mode, the TCAS window will popup automatically during a traffic advisory if you have it removed or hidden on the MFD. When it's set to MANUAL mode, it will remain hidden and you will not see the alert.

(Posted by Chris Capkalu on 11-22-15)

Thanks for explanation. No need for a switch as it will always be in AUTO in my setup.

Another question regarding the TCAS offsets: There is an offset for switching through the TCAS level band (Above, below, normal). This function will be operated via the RMU LSK5L normally. Do I need the RMU for triggering this specific offset or is it coded inside the MFD and I can use it without the RMU? I don't have an RMU in my flightdeck setup due to my multi radio (similar to the Boeing ones).

(Posted by Eric Tomlin on 11-24-15)

Defaults to normal. You would need an RMU or the ability to change the offset to change that offset. A physical switch or encoder would work if you wanted to ad that to a generic panel.
