REX and Dynamic Weather Discussion

(Original thread started on 05-22-10 by Mark L.)

The last few days I've noticed that my weather is not changing. It appears to download and update without error, but the weather doesn't change. Right now outside we have thunderstorms and overcast skies and rain. In FSX with multiple forced weather updates its a clear day! Anyone else getting this issue? I found a few posts where others are stating the past few weeks their weather is not updating as well.

Check your real world NOTAMs for your field you are flying out of. Your local WX reporting equipment may be nixed. Also check your FSUIPC settings on the miscellaneous tab.

Forgot to check FSUIPC settings......I said the heck with it, purchased, downloaded, installed and ran REX! Got my dynamic weather back! Wow, what another notch up in realism! I'm really happy so far with it. No noticeable hit to performance. I didn't get a lot of time with it tonight but tomorrow I'll play with it some more.

Hey Mark an Eric, I got REX 2.0 on disc a couple of weeks ago and after figuring out how it all works, it's some pretty amazing stuff if your computer will handle the HD settings. Then add some well done high res photo scenery and you would swear you are flying in the real thing. If you ever want some really nice free photo scenery, check out Blue Sky Scenery. His stuff is truly amazing! He does many places that are special like Glacier National Park, Mount Rainier and various others.

I'm really enjoying this (REX), never thought it would really add that much to it. Now I wouldn't be without it. Thanks Tom for the info on the Blue Sky scenery, I'll check it out.

Hey you REX experts! How do you flip to the REX WASys? Either Windows7 or the fact that I have TH2GO installed, doesn't like when I alt-Tab over to it. When I try to go back to FSX, I get a blank black screen and have to putz with it to get it to come back up. Can I run the WASys on a different PC? Like my laptop? What seems to work better is Alt-Enter to go to window mode to view it then flip back, still a pain though.

Back to the original problem in the first post in this thread by Mark: "The last few days I've noticed that my weather is not changing. It appears to download and update without error, but the weather doesn't change."

I've had the non-updating problem before also. In my case, it was a permissions problem with the folder/network access. In my case I run REX on a separate PC (only devoted to REX and EFB). If REX cannot access or write to the folder- it will not notify you. Just fails to update the weather.

Since Microsoft has abandon FSX it dropped the contract with Jeppesen for weather updates. I did not know Jepp did that. I have always used Metars which is real thing for weather. So I guess the question is is there a program which does this function for FSX.

REX (Real Environment Extreme) does this just fine for me. FSX has no input at all- it just displays what is presented by REX which is downloaded and updated as often as you wish. I haven't used FSX default weather in a long time except to test on a clear day.

It would not surprise me that Microsoft would drop the connection to a 3rd party as FSX has not been supported in a long time. They would have no need. Use REX- you wont regret it for many reasons.

I purchased REX several months ago and ran into an issue loading the darn thing on my computer. I spent the extra cash and got REX on CD thinking this would save time and frustration. I saved time loading up the cabinets of texture files but then ran into a wall. I spent well over an hour trying to figure out what it was I was missing. I'm not ready to say it is REX yet. I have been told it should be as easy as hitting NEXT, NEXT, YES, NEXT, OK, COMPLETE.

I thought it was me but Greg B. gave it a shot and could not figure it out either. Another example of something being more difficult than it should be.

That sucks Ron. Last night I downloaded the update which is basically a complete new install (especially since I had to redo all the settings) with no issue.

A while back I did have some issues and had to use a download manager as the files are massive and would get corrupted on download- causing a lot of install issues. I didn't use it last night tho. Might be worth a shot.

I bought the download version not long after it came out. No issues at all.

Also, would like to say that I got it for FSX first (it came out for X first) then FS9. Both work very nice. Just takes a long time to get all the new textures loaded when using for the first time.

Sorry about that Ron and since I brought up the problem, I will do some work on it and try to make a step by step clear instruction about this. One important new instruction, which is different than how REX was installed in the past is that it's file and Overdrive need to be installed in the Root directory ie: C:\.

A good video is James Holcomb's tutorial:

Here is a question for all to respond to. Does everyone start FSX by opening REX first. I am understanding if not then REX does not get current weather from NOAA

Note that the first post on this thread was years ago. I haven't had any issues as of late. Currently running their latest version and yes, start REX first and use the FLY NOW button to launch FSX. I suggest that if you are having issues to join and login into the REX support forum and browse some threads and/or post for some help.

One other item you mentioned, is that REX should be installed in a folder by itself, I have mine in C:\Real Environment Extreme Essential you could use just REX if you want. In some rare cases because of the different upgrade paths because of what version you might have if not on the latest, you may benefit from uninstalling and reinstalling with the latest version. Make sure you have the latest, they have fixed a lot of issues.
