Windows 10 update

Hi all,

Just a heads up. I got a significant message on my Windows 10 desktop from Microsoft that I had to update this version.

I was temporarily distracted so I just clicked on update, as you know how microsoft will be annoying if I didn't. The update was legitimate and it duly went through the download and restart,

Well what was the outcome ? For some of you lucky ducks the FMS would not start. Well been there, done that in the past so I knew the fix for that.  The fix being that the FMS had to be the first Com port to be accessed and so yep that it was it. The update made it Com port 3.

Well all good, the FMS fired up and off I went to bed.

Today I decided to try out my new ORBX buildings HD as I have a big mission planned for tomorrow night with my aircrew returning for the first time in nearly 10 weeks.

Setup a nice flight from YMES to YMER. Plugged in the flight plan into the FMS no worries. "What the ..."

No flight plan track visible in the MFD. Now what ?

Thank you Microsoft. Not only rearranged my Com ports but also prevented my Win 7 MFD computer accessing the flight plan in the FMS on my updated Win10 'confuser'.

Well needless to say burnt off 30 min resetting permissions and restarting both computers to finally be back to where I was.

Tomorrow is another day and I know that when I turn those computers back on ( 4 of 'em) that I will have my fingers crossed for whats next.

Watch out........................half the fun.

Cheers

Hey Mark,

All I can do is laugh!  I hope whatever Microsoft was trying to fix they got fixed, because they screwed everything else up!  I was talking to Jason and he is in the middle of having to reinstall Windows, not sure what the cause was, but he is also having "fun".  (By the way, reinstalling Windows is the easy part.  Reinstalling all your important programs is the hard part, not to mention how difficult it is to get a simulator squared away and happy with itself.)

My favorite little saying that Microsoft has is "Let's get started!"  It seems impossible to get past getting started sometimes does it not?  My last run in with Windows 10 ended with "Let's go back to Windows 7".

HANGAR 45 FORUM

I’m glad you wrote about Windows 10. I wonder if doing build from scratch would cause same problems.

Maciej,

As much as I love Windows 7, Microsoft has decreed that it is going to stop updates on January 14th 2020.

Whereas you can happily live without updates, at some point down the track, we will get cornered. Hardware drivers, direct X etc will make us need to update.

There is no doubt that if you look at the ORBX True Earth scenery out and coming out, ( P3D and XP) that in order for the view to look real and everything turned up, you will need to update the hardware. No problem now, but in 12 months, hmmmm ?

As at June 1 2019 here was a legit procedure to update your Win 7 to win 10 for nothing.

https://www.zdnet.com/article/heres-how-you-can-still-get-a-free-windows-10-upgrade/

I think part of my problem is having a windows 10 computer talking to Windows 7 computers. I cannot see that getting easier down the track. To run the Lear I think the general consensus was 2-3 computers, ( 4 in my case) so an operating mish mash cannot be a good option going forward.

So if you are doing a hardware build I would just go Win10. There are plenty of simmers out there with just that and no problems.

Just my 20 cents.

Regards

Mark S.

Your absolutely right Mark.  If anyone at this point is starting from complete scratch as far as the commuters go, it is hard to keep up the argument to stay with Windows 7, although I love it!

I am in that boat where I will be needing to rebuild all of my sim computers and will be going with Windows 10 reluctantly and fingers crossed, but that may be another year or two down the road.  As for my research computer with my drawing programs, I plan on riding Windows 7 into the ground.  I may have to turn auto updates off, even though there will not be anymore, you never know what tricks MS has up it's sleeve to push hold outs like me into Windows 10 or whatever the latest and greatest is.

My CNC computer at the workshop is a Windows XP machine and is off line.  It works perfectly and does exactly what I need it to do!  This particular computer is from the year 2004.  15 years old and still ticking.  I better shut up, bite my tongue and knock on wood!

Hi guys ( and any girls to be politically correct),

Well here is my update on my update.

I have had issues with 2 of my computers for a while now. One being Win10 and the other Win7. One has the FMS with the routes directory, which needed to be read by the MFD and the other , you guessed it, had the MFD. Well every time the Win10 computer wanted to access the MFD on the Win7 computer it was access denied see your administrator. Wouldn't be so bad except I was the administrator !

So after spending hours/ days/weeks/ months/ awake/asleep at it, I could get the 'shares' done by, you could say 'the back door'.

Well after upgrading the FGC it was imperative that the shares were done correctly, or it just didn't work.

So I bit the bullet and upgraded the Win7 computer to Win10.

The whole process from download to coughing and spluttering took maybe about 3 'gut wrenching' hours.

Well finally restarted for the last time and VOILA Win10. Fantastic.

Not so fast buddy.

No USB's, except one ! I was previously using a Logitech keyboard with trackpad. Nothing was working now. So fortunately I had kept an old PS2 keyboard so turned the computer off and installed that. Beaut, keyboard but no mouse.

I duly found the usb that worked so plugged in my trusty keyboard with track pad. Bugger. Keyboard active but no track pad.

Well now the sweat was pouring. Try getting around the desktop using keyboard commands only ! I knew that all I needed was the mobo drivers to get the usb's working again. So long story short I tried to get them on the mobo website but one of the down boxes only responded to a mouse. So I downloaded them using another computer and then loaded onto a usb stick. Awesome. Except when I plugged the usb stick in it was not recognised. Darn it.

So here I was with a computer that was useless................. and had Win10. I couldn't update the drivers, so the only option was to go back to Win7. Well I got to the menu for reversing the update and pressed the command for re installing Win7. Well I can tell you it did not take any longer than 5-10 minutes and straight away EVERYTHING worked. Yippee I'm still stuck at the starting gate for upgrading !

Well take home message is.

The age of the computer to upgrade may matter.

The drivers need to be either with Microsoft or you'll be given none.

Download the drivers and have them on the desktop so that you can access them using keyboard commands.

I intend to give this another whirl when I have a day to burn but at the moment I am basking in the glory of Win7.

As a side note someone in the ORBX forum did say that Microsoft intends to have Direct X 12 available for Win7. So apart from my permissions problems, Microsoft can get stuffed and I'll stay with Win7 for this computer as long as I can.

Don't you love the curve balls flight simming throws at you !

Cheers everyone,

Mark S.

Hey Mark,

Looks like you tried to update your computer to Windows 10 twice in the month of July.  You won't get that month back now will ya!  You also might want to change the title of this thread because as of this date, it does not apply! LOL

All kidding aside, this should not be this difficult but I know first hand it is, and like you, I had to retreat back to Windows 7 if I wanted to avoid having to spend a ton of cash on a new computer.  On my current trajectory, by the time I am ready to start playing with Flight sim and the computers, I will end up getting new ones, at least new parts to make new computers.  Mine are all 2012 machines.

I don't know if this is a fact or just good advice, but if we want hassle free communication between our computers, they should all be running on the same exact OS.  As an example, all three of mine are Windows 7 Professional machines.  For the most part, it was fairly easy to get them configured and sharing information with each other.

If I were to try to add either a Windows XP machine or a Windows 10 machine, I could expect some headaches trying to get them to talk to each other nicely.  It can be done I don't doubt, but it would probably take someone who either works at MS or is in the tech field.  Or a whole lot of YouTube videos!

All this craziness with USBs not working is a whole other issue that ALSO, should not be a problem, but it is.  I think that once you get past that hurdle, that is when the real fun begins trying to get your computers to talk to one another.

I just purchased a Windows 10, 4.2 ghz, 8g memory refurbished machine for $200. Added 3 graphics cards and 1T electronic HD from my Windows 7 machine. Installed Prepar3D V4.2 and runs fine.

I think the real problem is upgrading from Win7 without formatting your hard drive, which is most difficult and time consuming.

I have 2 all in one PCs and one laptop for the rest of the house. All running Windows 10. The only problems I had was with the one upgraded from Win7.

The 2 client PCs on the sim are still Win7. The other Win7 machine, replaced with the Win10, I use for my CNC instead of a laptop that went Kaput.

Many PCs that run Win7 (Pre 2009 and 2010) were really built for WinXP. Vista and Win7 will run (My clients are Dell Optima 760s and WILL NOT upgrade to Win10.) You need to check your Bios and Chipset (processor) manufacture date. May not be compatible with Win10. Graphics cards which process video internally with it's own memory may also not be compatible.

The following link will show which Intel Processors will support Win10. One can also check AMD's site. Same with graphics.

Hi Dave,

Maybe us slightly older gentleman don't like chucking stuff out so we keep it going as long as possible ?

However.

There are so many things in our lives now that get updated so frequently that you quickly get left behind. Just buy a new car and look at all the new beaut gizmos they have compared to the one you just traded. I just had my satellite TV Foxtel box updated and for 'free' they made me jump from ver 1 straight to ver 4. Wow the difference was chalk and cheese. Now I don't have time to go to bed. Updating appears to have it's advantages unless the status quo is working fine. Your CNC computer working for you, Ron and Mark C. for example is probably not worth upgrading.Donkey speed or Porsche speed, does it really matter to a cnc machine ?

I think your points are quite valid, in that there seems to be different versions of Win7 and infinite versions of hardware. So, updating just because it still works doesn't mean it will without any potential dramas. Fortunately in your reference to the Intel website all of the cpu's upgraded to the Win10 64 bit version. I think and had first hand experience that the mobo and drivers are more of the potential problem. Ironically enough my hardware works fine it is the damn windows updates on my Win 10 machine that seem to create havoc with the Win 7 computers on the network. Disclaimer; this is in my unique setup whereas the next persons will work like a charm.

But then again........................maybe I'll spend more time watching my new whizzbang Ver 4 Foxtel box !

Cheers
