Updating FSX / P3D AIRAC and NavAids

(Original thread started on 01-04-16 Shane Barnes)

I had the opportunity to explore the possibility of updating the AIRAC cycle that is used in FSX and P3D. The AIRAC cycle currently used is ten years old (2005) so it is a little out of date. This is the same cycle in P3D as best as I can tell.

This is not a problem if you have a set of charts that correspond with the 2005 AIRAC cycle being used but if you are using the FOREFLIGHT APP on an IPAD or using Jason's CDU program (When it is officially released) you will want to update the AIRAC cycle to a more current cycle.

I started researching and found a program that is due to be released soon. It is called FsAerodata. It looks like the program will be a yearly subscription that will allow you to update the AIRAC cycle throughout the year. You will also need a subscription to NAVIGRAPH (you will need this subscription for the CDU also)

Here is a link to FsAerodata, take a moment and read thru the site. This will give you much more information about what the product offers and why updating the data is important. The product does not appear to be released for purchase yet and I did not see a price list. According to the website it was due to be released at the end of December so it may be released soon.

I found a free online flight planning site called Simbrief.com. Here is the link to the site:

You will need to register at the site to gain access but there is no cost to use the site. A nice feature of this site is the ability to update the AIRAC cycle via Navigraph which as explained in my previous post, you will need to update the CDU AIRAC if you plan on using the latest AIRAC cycle.

There are several free online flight planning sites available and you should be able to find one that will suite your flying style whether you like simple flight plans or using more in depth flight plans.
