G'Day from Melbourne Australia! (Will Sasse)

(Original thread started on 02-25-10 by Will Sasse)

Time to introduce myself ....

I am a real-world pilot (flying light twins) returning to flying after a 15 year lay-off caused by family obligations. I finally reached an age where I can say "Enough, I going flying again!" (and mean it!!). I am now actively looking for pilot jobs locally.

I've been using FSX for several years as to keep my IFR skills warm. Great for keeping the instrument scan going, but it misses a lot of the action.

So, I thought, why not build a better simulator? Something more than just a single screen. I picked up 3 x 24" screens and Saitek yoke/throttle/pedals, but something was still missing!

Okay, on to plan B. More!!!! Something with a few switches. Found the generic steam-gauge pre-built simulators, wasn't impressed. I wanted something with a multi-screen EFIS setup. Something already in FSX. Not a 'heavy'. The LJ45 seemed perfect, screen driven avionics, simple main panel, no overhead to worry about.... (Plus there may still be a chance for me to fly a real one one day!)

A bit of search on the 'net quickly brought me here. Wow! What you folk have achieved is brilliant. Definitely given my a path to follow, resources to study, lots of good information.

Now the current plan is to build a LJ45 full cockpit panel simulator with no motion, no shell. Duplicating the MIP, all switch panels, throttle quadrant, and avionics as best I can. I'll use the 24" screens for the visuals until everything else is finished, then see whats available at that time.

Going to start with the DU's on the MIP, get myself something to fly - even if it is just screen driven to start with - using either the Jet45 or PM RJ software. Then I'll move onto the panels, then the throttle quadrant/controls.

Now for my first question.....

I have seen, and am planning on using, a three screen setup, left & right in landscape for the PFDs & MFDs, centre in portrait orientation for radios, warning panel, & standby instruments.

But I was wondering what size screens did you use for the MIP DU's?

Thanks, Will Sasse

Welcome to the forum Will!  Check out our information in the resources page for more information on the center monitor for the RMUs/CWP/Standby gauges. We use 17" screens for the DUs 1-4.

Hey Will, Welcome to the hangar! Lot of great people and information here to help you along with your project. We have a few builders from down under and another one that just emailed me!

Thanks for the welcome folks. Looking forward to getting some "air" under my feet and being able to contribute something of use.

Eric: Thanks for the link, just what I need. I've read so much on here lately that I can't remember where it all is!

Alaxus: I'm in Toorak and get out to Essendon airport regularly. So not too far. A visit sounds like a good idea.
